Constitutional Development
1773
Regulating Act
First step by British Parliament to regulate East India Company's affairs in India. Established Supreme Court at Calcutta.
1784
Pitt's India Act
Created Board of Control to supervise Company's civil and military affairs. Established dual government system.
1833
Charter Act of 1833
Made Governor-General of Bengal as Governor-General of India. Created Law Commission (Macaulay).
1858
Government of India Act
Crown took over governance from East India Company. Secretary of State for India appointed.
1861
Indian Councils Act
Beginning of representative institutions. Indians admitted to Legislative Councils as non-official members.
1909
Indian Councils Act (Morley-Minto)
Introduced separate electorates for Muslims. Expanded Legislative Councils.
1919
Government of India Act (Montagu-Chelmsford)
Introduced Dyarchy at provincial level. Bicameral legislature at center.
1935
Government of India Act
Federal structure proposed. Provincial autonomy introduced. All-India Federation (never implemented).
1946
Cabinet Mission Plan
Proposed three-tier federal structure. Rejected by Muslim League leading to Direct Action Day.
1947
Indian Independence Act
Created two dominions - India and Pakistan. Constituent Assembly became sovereign body.
1950
Constitution of India
Came into effect on January 26. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was Chairman of Drafting Committee.
